IOSH Managing Safely Approval for MacNeillie Staff

A number of MacNeillie managers and supervisors have successfully completed the flagship IOSH Managing Safely course, gaining a greater understanding of their responsibilities when it comes to health and safety.

Ferit Bolukbasi, Scott Eveson, Mark Hodgkins, Bryan Humphries, Steve Mason, Jim Pedley, Michael Plimmer, Shawn Preston and John Smith each completed the 4 day long course, which took place between September and December 2015, achieving the IOSH Managing Safely qualification. The course comprises of assessing and covering risks, understanding responsibilities, identifying hazards, investigating accidents and incidents, measuring performance and protecting the environment.

IOSH Managing Safely delivers knowledge and tools to tackle the health and safety issues they’re responsible for. Importantly, it brings home just why health and safety is such an essential part of their job.

Jim Pedley found the course very interesting and informative, adding: “It has made me more focused to what we need to remove or improve on. This is the start of a long journey, but one that will be beneficial for everyone in the workplace.”

MacNeillie’s Six Sigma Investment in People

Three MacNeillie managers are the first tranche of people to embark on a programme of Six Sigma training designed to reduce waste and inefficiency for customers.

Lewis Bullock, Quality Manager; Adam Bradford, Contract Manager and Nick Wright, Project Manager (Special Projects) are on track to get a yellow belt (level 2 qualification) having kicked off with their training in June. Six Sigma is an impressive set of techniques and tools developed for process improvement. Lewis described how it works: “It’s success lies in identifying and removing the causes of defects and also minimising variability in processes.” Adam agreed: “I can see how we will become part of a key infrastructure of people: Champions, Black Belts, Green Belts and Yellow Belts, each becoming experts in the Six Sigma methods. I already feel very engaged and keen to see how I can apply my new learnings to the benefit of MacNeillie customers.”

Nick added a slightly different perspective: “I like the structure – we have a defined sequence of steps and quantified value targets to reduce time, pollution and costs.” The programme is ongoing and part of MacNeillie’s commitment to provide development for its people, deliver competitive edge and offer benefits to its customers.

Toby Carter, Head of Commercial observed: “We are already feeling the benefits after only 12 weeks. The plan is to introduce a new team of people as part of the drive for leaner processes and reduction of waste.”

Friday 11th is Festive Fund Raising Day

With Christmas just around the corner, what better way to celebrate by having some festive fun across our sites and offices in support of charity.

Across Babcock Support Services Division (SSD), Friday 11th December 2015 was officially known as “Festive Friday”. We encouraged all SSD employees to wear something festive (so long as it didn’t compromise safety) and donate just £2 to St. John Ambulance. MacNeillie staff raised a total of £236 for St. John Cymru (Wales).

We would like to thank everyone who contributed during Festive Friday.

MacNeillie IVA Test Facility Enhanced

MacNeillie have recently enhanced their IVA (Individual Vehicle Approval) alternative test facility. In addition to approving category M1 and N1 vehicles, we are now able to test N2 vehicles (gross vehicle weight capped at 5000kg) on site, as well as O1 and O2 trailers.

This now means we can test the following categories on site:

M1 – Passenger vehicle no more than 8 seats and special purpose

N1 – Light goods vehicle 3500kg or less

N2 – Mid size goods vehicle with a capped weight at 5000kg

O1 – Small trailers 750kg or less

O2 – Light trailers 750kg up to 3500kg

The N2, O1 and O2 testing accreditation removes the inconvenience involved in transporting vehicles/trailers to the nearest test centre, incurring travel costs and test charges. Along side our MOT bay and EMC test chamber, the further accreditation provides a greater service for our customers.

Our IVA test facility is accessible to the public. This provides the local region with the benefits of registering vehicles onsite in conjunction with reduced travelling. For more information about IVA testing or to book an IVA test for your vehicle, you can use the Gov.uk website or follow the link for an application form: https://www.gov.uk/vehicle-approval/individual-vehicle-approval-application-forms
